Popular Supplement Plans

Popular Supplement Plans

Medicare Supplement plans supplement your Original Medicare benefits. When you buy a Medicare Supplement policy, you pay your private insurer a monthly premium in addition to the monthly Part B premium you pay for Original Medicare.

With a Medicare Supplement plan, Medicare pays its share of your covered health care costs. Then, your Medicare Supplement policy pays its share.

The most popular Medicare Supplement Plans are Plans F, G, and N.

Medigap Plan F

Medigap Plan F is the most comprehensive and popular Medicare Supplement plan, covering the following:

  • Medicare Part A coinsurance payments and hospital costs
  • Medicare Part B copayment or coinsurance
  • The first three pints of blood used in a medical procedure
  • Medicare Part A hospice care coinsurance expense or copayment
  • Skilled nursing facility care coinsurance
  • Medicare Part A deductible
  • Medicare Part B deductible
  • Medicare Part B excess charge
  • 80% of Foreign travel exchange (up to plan limits)

Medigap Plan F fills all of the gaps in Original Medicare, leaving you completely protected.

Medigap Plan G

Medigap Plan G is the second most popular Medicare Supplement plan and has the most substantial coverage available outside of Medigap Plan F. This plan covers the following:

  • Medicare Part A coinsurance payments and hospital costs
  • Medicare Part B copayment or coinsurance
  • The first three pints of blood used in a medical procedure
  • Medicare Part A hospice care coinsurance expense or copayment
  • Skilled nursing facility care coinsurance
  • Medicare Part A deductible
  • Medicare Part B excess charge
  • 80% of Foreign travel exchange (up to plan limits)

With this plan, all of the gaps in Original Medicare are covered except for your Medicare Part B deductible.

Medigap Plan N

Medigap Plan N is a popular Medicare Supplement plan that is less comprehensive than plans F and G but more comprehensive than plans A and B. With this plan, the following is covered:

  • Medicare Part A coinsurance payments and hospital costs
  • Medicare Part B copayment or coinsurance (exceptions include: a copayment of up to $20 for some office visits and up to a $50 copayment for emergency room visits that don’t result in inpatient admission)
  • The first three pints of blood used in a medical procedure
  • Medicare Part A hospice care coinsurance expense or copayment
  • Skilled nursing facility care coinsurance
  • Medicare Part A deductible
  • 80% of Foreign travel exchange (up to plan limits)

Plan N offers you a lower premium and in exchange, you take on some copays and a small annual deductible.

How Do These Plans Compare With Each Other?

The main difference between these plans is whether your Part B deductible and Part B excess charge are covered. Plan F covers both, Plan G covers only your excess charge, and Plan N covers neither.

If you want the most coverage (which also comes with the highest premium), Plan F is a great choice. If you want substantial coverage with a lower premium, Plan N might be for you. For a middle of the road option that covers your Plan B deductible, you might want to opt for Plan G.
