Medicare Eligibility

Medicare Eligibility

For many, eligibility for Medicare begins at age 65. You must also be a United States citizen or be a permanent resident who has lived in the U.S. for at least five years. However, other requirements must be met to be fully eligible for Medicare.

Who Is Eligible for Medicare?

You are eligible for Medicare if you meet one of the following conditions:

  • You’re 65 years or older
  • You’re younger than 65 with a disability
  • You have End-Stage Renal Disease

You may be eligible to get Medicare Part A premium-free if you’re age 65 or older and:

  • You or your spouse worked/paid Medicare taxes for at least 10 years
  • You can receive Social Security or Railroad benefits but you haven’t filed for them
  • You or your spouse had Medicare-covered government employment
  • You’re receiving retirement benefits from Social Security or the Railroad Retirement Board

Eligibility requirements for Part B are the same as Part A. However, unlike Part A, Part B requires a premium. To enroll in a Part C plan, you must be enrolled in both Part A and B. And, for Part D, you can enroll in it as long as you are enrolled in either Part A or B.

Do I Need Medicare?

It is not required for you to enroll in Medicare, but if you do not have other health insurance, you will face penalties for delaying your Medicare enrollment. And, for many, Part A is free. This means that even with current health insurance, you can still enroll in Part A at no cost to you as far as premiums are concerned.
