HMO Plans

HMO Plans

HMO and PPO plans are the most popular Medicare Advantage options. Like all Medicare Advantage plans, HMO plans are offered by private insurance companies. In an HMO plan, you usually have to get your care from health care providers within the plan’s network unless you need emergency care, out-of-area urgent care, or out-of-area dialysis. HMO plans are typically inexpensive and can save you money on your health care costs.

As long as you’re enrolled in Original Medicare first, you can join an HMO plan.

What Do HMO Plans Cover?

As with all Medicare Advantage plans, HMO plans must provide at least the same level of coverage as Original Medicare. Generally, prescription drugs (Medicare Part D) are also covered in HMO plans.

With an HMO plan, you may be required to pay the full cost of services when you receive healthcare outside of your plan’s network. You’re required to choose a primary care doctor, and you usually need a referral from them to see a specialist.

Why Choose an HMO Plan?

As with all Medicare Advantage plans, there is a yearly limit on your out-of-pocket costs that Original Medicare plans don’t have. Once you reach whatever your plan’s limit is, you pay nothing for covered services for the remainder of the year. Depending on your health care needs, this could save you money over just having Original Medicare.

HMO Plans vs. PPO Plans

HMO plans and PPO plans have the following similarities:

  • They both cover full Original Medicare benefits
  • They both typically include Medicare Part D (prescription drug coverage) and may have preferred pharmacy networks
  • They both use provider networks
  • They’re both offered through private Medicare-approved insurance companies
  • Both require you to have Original Medicare and to live within the plan’s service area, like any Medicare Advantage plan

But there are important differences between these plans:

  • HMOs are more strict with their provider networks, while PPOs allow you to see doctors outside of your plan network
  • HMO plans require you to choose a primary care doctor, but PPO plans do not
  • HMO plans usually require you to get a referral to see a specialist, while PPO plans do not

HMO plans are the most reliant on a network of providers. You get less flexibility and freedom, but access care at a lower cost than a PPO plan.
