Advantage For Veterans

Advantage For Veterans

If you are a veteran with VA coverage, you may think it’s not necessary to enroll in Medicare. However, it could benefit you more than what you think. You can combine your VA coverage with Medicare Advantage, ultimately increasing your coverage.

Why Get Medicare Advantage?

With VA coverage, you are typically required to receive your care within a VA facility. However, by enrolling in a Medicare Advantage plan, you can receive care outside of the VA facility and still have coverage.

Coverage with VA is also not always guaranteed, so having the extra coverage to fall back on can save you hundreds, even thousands of dollars in out-of-pocket costs.

Coverage with Medicare Advantage includes:

  • The same coverage as Original Medicare, plus additional benefits:
    • Dental, vision, and hearing coverage
    • Transportation for doctor visits
    • Nutrition and wellness programs
    • Gym memberships
    • Prescription drug coverage
    • Adult day-care services

VA Coverage

Every veteran’s healthcare benefits package is unique. Services covered include care to help:

  • Prevent future health problems
  • Improve your ability to function
  • Treat illnesses and injuries
  • Enhance your quality of life

Preventative such as the following may be covered:

  • Health exams
  • Health education
  • Counseling on genetic diseases
  • Immunization against infectious diseases

Inpatient hospital services like the following are usually covered:

  • Surgeries
  • Medical treatments
  • Kidney dialysis
  • Acute care
  • Specialized care

Urgent and emergency care like the following may be covered:

  • Urgent care for injuries/illnesses that need immediate attention but aren’t life-threatening
  • Emergency care in a non-VA hospital or other medical settings—only under certain conditions

Other services like the following may also be covered:

  • Mental health services to treat certain issues like post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) or depression
  • Assisted living and home health care
  • Prescriptions approved or written by a VA doctor

Some veterans may qualify for added benefits like dental care. Your covered benefits depend on:

  • Your priority group
  • The advice of your VA primary care provider, and
  • Medical standards for treating your health conditions

Who Can Get VA Benefits?
