Medigap Plan A
Medigap Plan A is a basic Medicare Supplement plan that covers Medicare Part A coinsurance payments, Medicare Part B copayment or coinsurance, the first three pints of blood used in a medical procedure, and Part A hospice care coinsurance expense or copayment.
It’s one of the least comprehensive and least expensive options available. Medigap A covers less than any other Medigap plan, but it still covers a key benefit: 20% of outpatient medical care that isn’t covered by Medicare.
Medigap Plan B
Medigap Plan B is a Medicare Supplement plan that covers everything Medigap Plan A covers (Medicare Part A coinsurance payments, Medicare Part B copayment or coinsurance, the first three pints of blood used in a medical procedure, and Part A hospice care coinsurance expense or copayment), plus your Medicare Part A deductible.
It is the least comprehensive and least expensive plan after Medigap Plan A. It may be a good option for you if you’re looking for more coverage at a relatively low rate.
Medigap Plan C
Medigap Plan C is a more expensive and comprehensive plan. It covers:
- Medicare Part A coinsurance payments
- Medicare Part B copayment or coinsurance
- The first three pints of blood used in a medical procedure
- Part A hospice care coinsurance expense or copayment)
- Your Medicare Part A deductible
- Skilled nursing facility care
- Your Part B deductible
- 80% of foreign travel emergency medical care costs are also covered.
In fact, the only expense Medicare Plan C doesn’t cover is Part B excess charges. If you live in a state that doesn’t allow Part B excess charges, Medigap Plan C could be a great option for you.
Medigap Plan D
Medigap Plan D covers:
- Medicare Part A coinsurance payments
- Medicare Part B copayment or coinsurance
- The first three pints of blood used in a medical procedure
- Part A hospice care coinsurance expense or copayment
- Skilled nursing facility care
- Your Part A deductible
- 80% of foreign travel emergency medical care costs
If you’re looking for a plan that covers more than plans A or B, but less than a fully comprehensive plan like plan C or F, Plan D could be a great option for you.
Medigap Plan F
Medigap Plan F is the most comprehensive and popular Medicare Supplement plan. About 57% of all Medigap policies in use in 2016 were Medigap Plan F. Why is this particular plan so popular? It covers:
- Medicare Part A coinsurance payments and hospital costs
- Medicare Part B copayment or coinsurance
- The first three pints of blood used in a medical procedure
- Medicare Part A hospice care coinsurance expense or copayment
- Skilled nursing facility care coinsurance
- Medicare Part A deductible
- Medicare Part B deductible
- Medicare Part B excess charge
- 80% of Foreign travel exchange (up to plan limits)
Medigap Plan F fills all of the gaps in Original Medicare, leaving you completely protected. Unfortunately, this is now only available to people who became eligible for Medicare prior to January 1, 2020. If that’s not you, check out Medigap Plan G for another comprehensive option.
Medigap Plan G
Medigap Plan G is the second most popular Medicare Supplement plan and has the most substantial coverage available outside of Medigap Plan F. This plan covers the following:
- Medicare Part A coinsurance payments and hospital costs
- Medicare Part B copayment or coinsurance
- The first three pints of blood used in a medical procedure
- Medicare Part A hospice care coinsurance expense or copayment
- Skilled nursing facility care coinsurance
- Medicare Part A deductible
- Medicare Part B excess charge
- 80% of Foreign travel exchange (up to plan limits)
With this plan, all of the gaps in Original Medicare are covered except for your Medicare Part B deductible. If you would like full coverage but can’t access Medigap Plan F, Plan G is a great substitute choice.
Medigap Plan K
Medigap Plan K is becoming a more popular supplement plan choice. This plan fully covers your Medicare Part A coinsurance and hospital costs, and uses a cost sharing model for other expenses. It covers 50% of the cost of the following:
- Medicare Part B copayment or coinsurance
- The first three pints of blood used in a medical procedure
- Part A hospice care coinsurance expense or copayment
- Skilled nursing facility care
- Part A deductible
If a cost-sharing approach and a lower premium appeals to you, Plan K could be the plan for you.
Medigap Plan L
Medigap Plan L is another plan that takes a cost-sharing approach. It covers your Part A coinsurance and hospital costs in full, as well as 75% of the following:
- Medicare Part B copayment or coinsurance
- The first three pints of blood used in a medical procedure
- Part A hospice care coinsurance expense or copayment
- Skilled nursing facility care
- Part A deductible
If a cost-sharing approach and a lower premium appeals to you but you’d like to pay a little more up front to pay a little less when you get care, Medigap Plan L could be the right choice for you.
Medigap Plan M
Medigap Plan M is a fairly basic supplement plan. It offers a slightly lower monthly premium in exchange for you paying half of your Part A deductible. It covers the following in full:
- Medicare Part A coinsurance payments
- Medicare Part B copayment or coinsurance
- The first three pints of blood used in a medical procedure
- Part A hospice care coinsurance expense or copayment
- Skilled nursing facility care
It also covers 80% of foreign travel emergency medical care costs. This plan could be a great option if you don’t expect to visit the hospital often and feel comfortable with the occasional cost-sharing when you do.
Medigap Plan N
Medigap Plan N is a popular Medicare Supplement plan that is less comprehensive than plans F and G but more comprehensive than plans A and B. With this plan, the following is covered:
- Medicare Part A coinsurance payments and hospital costs
- Medicare Part B copayment or coinsurance (exceptions include: a copayment of up to $20 for some office visits and up to a $50 copayment for emergency room visits that don’t result in inpatient admission)
- The first three pints of blood used in a medical procedure
- Medicare Part A hospice care coinsurance expense or copayment
- Skilled nursing facility care coinsurance
- Medicare Part A deductible
- 80% of Foreign travel exchange (up to plan limits)
Plan N offers you a lower premium and in exchange, you take on some copays and a small annual deductible. If you need a lower premium but want more comprehensive coverage than Plan A or Plan B and don’t want to cost share, Plan N could be a great option.
